The Role of Storage Racking in the Modern Home

Keeping a home looking spick and span is more than going round the home with a vacuum cleaner and cleaning cloth. It is also about good organization, and ensuring that all your possessions have a “home” where they can be stored, and even more importantly, found. Searching in vain for something you know you have, but is nowhere to be seen, can be a frustrating experience.

Keeping the place tidy is partly, if not mostly, about attitude. If you are determined to have a tidy home, then you will. However, if things have got out of hand, and the clutter has turned your home into something resembling a landfill site, it could well be that the frustrations will come to a peak. When they do, and you can’t find something you need urgently, it could be the spark you needed to determine, once and for all, to sort out the mess and get organized.

With the right attitude to keep a tidy home, what remains is having the right storage racking, cabinets, wardrobes and shelves in the places where you actually need them. It also helps to be ruthless about disposing of things you don’t need, rather than hang on to them so they had to your storage needs.

The main places where you can expect to use storage racking to good effect are in the garage, the kitchen, bathroom and the garden shed. More recently, though, with the growth of multimedia, there is now a demand for CD and DVD storage racks, most likely in your living room.

Racking can be either open, which is traditionally what we think of when we conjure an image of a rack, or enclosed within a cabinet. In the kitchen, for example, you may have plate racks under the countertop hidden from view, with a ceiling rack above for hanging pots and pans.

It is in the garage that you may find the most need for more elaborate, weight bearing racks. This is especially true if you can no longer fit the car in the garage, forced out by bulky items like bikes. Overhead garage storage racks are a great space saver, and there are some excellent modern designs which will accommodate a lot of your difficult to store gear. Bike hoists are very useful in freeing up ground level storage space.

Overhead storage systems in the garage, plus the use of wall racks, can relieve many of your clutter problems. While there may be some expense involved, they can carry quite a load if needed. This can be a solution to your largest problem item: the car. A large number of Americans cannot fit their car in the garage, so there is no need to be one of them.

In the garden, a metal, plastic or wood shed can be given similar racking treatment to the garage. However, please ensure that beams supporting overhead racks in particular are adequate to bear the load.
